Full Description
August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a group of undated and possibly multi-phase ditches are visible on aerial photographs to the southwest of College Farm, Aldeby (S1-S3). The site is centred on TM 4611 9195, although this point does not correspond to an archaeological feature on the ground. The eastern part of this site is located within an area of cropmarks that appear to form part of a field system of unknown, but possible late prehistoric to Roman date (NHER 44933).
The site consists of a pairs of roughly parallel double ditched linears at approximately TM 4622 9190 to TM 4624 9202. It is possible that these ditches are of a broadly contemporary date, although this is not certain. Another possible double ditched feature may be present to the western edge of the site at TM 4597 9201, although in this case the double ditched arrangement only exists for approximately 12m, with only the western ditch continuing to the south. These double ditched cropmarks may represent fragments of trackways or possibly double ditched field boundaries. This western double ditched linear is cut by or cuts another ditch fragment, obviously part of a different phase of activity at the site.
