Summary

A World War Two wireless or radio site is visible on aerial photographs to the northwest of Newport Farm, South Walsham. This site may be a wireless telegraphy (W/T) or radio telephony (R/T) site. A High Frequency Direction Finding Station (HF/DF), presumably associated with this site, is located 540m to the northeast (NHER 49451). The HF/DF sites formed a system of direction finding stations that helped lost aircraft return to base and to plot the location of mayday signals.

A World War Two wireless or radio site is visible on aerial photographs to the northwest of Newport Farm, South Walsham (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 3612 1207.
The site consists of a central structure of uncertain shape due to poor quality of the aerial photographs. It is possible that it is rectangular, although this is certain. The structure is surrounded by an array of four masts, idenitified by the remains of mast bases or tethering points, visible as four small concrete points. The structures sit within a square enclosure or fenced off area, 88m across. It is possible that these tethers held four pencil masts, although no sign of the actual masts can be detected on the aerial photographs in February 1946 (S1).
To the immediate east of the main site is a pair of circular parchmarks of identical size and shape, both 15m in diameter and with possible traces of a narrow external ditch (S2). There is no sign of these features in February 1946 (S1), however given the plan and location of the features it is probable that these are the remains of former gun emplacements, searchlight or similar structures associated with the radio site.
