Full Description
May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
A group of World War Two structures and defences is visible on aerial photographs to the north of Corner Farm, Hemblington Road, North Burlington (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 3620 1113.
The site consists of a small group of huts located alongside the Hemblington Road. An oblong covered area may represent an earthen covered structure, such as an air raid shelter, although this is not certain and it may be agricultural. The remains of a circular structure at TG 3612 1110, 8m in diameter, is likely to be the remains of a gun emplacement. A small circular feature to the south of the group may represent the remains of a spigot mortar emplacement, although no characteristic circular pit could be identified. An oval mark, located to the east within a field, TG 3625 1101, may also mark the position of a former gun emplacement or similar defensive structure. Another possible military structure is tentatively identified to the northeast of this site, at TG 3631 1123, again circular and approximately 9m in diameter (S1). Although the poor quality of the aerial photographs makes a definite identification impossible and it is entirely possible that the structure is agricultural.
