Map

June 2007. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of rectilinear enclosures, probably fields and crofts of medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S11). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3626 0254 and were previously recorded as part of NHER 17584. A group of rectilinear enclosures cropmarks are present along the south-west side of Langley Street / Langley Green road. They are located immediately opposite (south-west) of the site of Langley Abbey (NHER 10344). These enclosures appear to front onto the road and are likely to be small fields and crofts of medieval post medieval date. Faden’s 1797 county map (S12) does not show any buildings on the opposite side of the road to the abbey site. The area is shown with scattered trees and may have formed part of the grounds of Langley Abbey farmhouse, which are depicted in a similar manner. A small group of buildings is shown to the south-west of the road to the south of the abbey site where The Wherry Inn and Staithe farmhouse are still located (around TG 3638 0206). Otherwise the settlement shown on Faden’s map is lies to either side of the cropmarks along this road at the modern nuclei of Langley Green to the north-west and Langley Street to the south-east. It is probable that the cropmarks relate to settlement that mainly existed alongside the road during the active life of the abbey in the medieval period.
