Map

May 2007. Norfolk NMP.
This large and dispersed cropmark site consists of former field boundaries of unknown, but possibly late prehistoric to Roman date, visible on aerial photographs to the east of Green Lane on the border of the South Walsham and Upton with Fishley parishes (S1-S6). The site is centred on TG 3793 1119. Finds of Roman and medieval date have been found in the general vicinity of these cropmarks (NHER 39274).
At TG 3763 1164 is a small square enclosure, 20m across, with a possible trackway leading into it (S2). Similarly sized enclosed areas of land may be located at TG 3776 1089 (S5), although these features are less certain and may be the result of a palimpsest of ditches. The remainder of the site consists of fragmentary and dispersed linear ditches, the majority of which are aligned northwest to southeast or northeast to southwest, and are likely to represent former field boundaries, and where double ditched, trackways. These features are located within the vicinity of several large areas of enclosures and fields (such as NHER 11858, 49469), following a similar alignment and these are associated with Roman material. The cropmarks recorded under this number are likely to represent more than one phase, potentially spanning the late prehistoric to Roman periods, although some of the ditches may be later.
