NHER 49508 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of undated and multiphase enclosures and field boundaries

The cropmarks of a series of undated and multiphase enclosures and field boundaries, some of which are likely to be Roman in date, are visible on aerial photographs to the east of South Walsham Broad, Pilson Green (S1-S3). A number of Roman date finds have been recovered from this general vicinity (NHER 13096 and 36589). The site is centred on TG 3741 1394. These cropmarks are overlain by a series of field boundaries of probable post medieval date (NHER 49509).
At TG 3736 1371 are a series of conjoined rectilinear enclosures, divided into sections approximately 15m across and of varying lengths. A small square enclosed area sits within one of these enclosures, 6-7m across, with a central pit. It seems likely that this area was demarcated for a particular purpose of activity. To the north of these enclosures is a series of trackways and boundaries following a similar alignment to this enclosure group and these are likely to be broadly contemporary. A small ring ditch is located at TG 3729 1380, 4.5m across, and it is possible that this represents the eaves-drip gully of a small roundhouse or similar structure. The general alignment of these enclosures and boundaries is similar that of the enclosures and fields of probable Roman date to the west (NHER 49468).
The remainder of this site consists of more fragmentary cropmarks, the majority of which are likely to be former field boundaries, although given the location and typography it must be borne in mind that some may be drainage ditches. The majority of the ditches are aligned NW-SE and NE-SW and similar cropmarks were also recorded to the east (NHER 49507). The date of these more fragmentary field boundaries is uncertain. A late prehistoric – Roman date is probable, although some may be later.
