Summary

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in November 2007. In-situ remains of the medieval city wall were recorded, although the associated extra-mural ditch was not encountered. A small quantity of late medieval/early post medieval pottery sherds were recovered. Remains of a 19th century malthouse associated with Pockthorpe brewery were also identified to the east of the city wall. A second evaluation in 2008 revealed in-situ remains of the extra-mural defensive ditch, and timbers probably dating to the upkeep of the town's defences in 1727. Pottery, animal bone, oyster shell and clay pipe fragments were also recovered.

May-July 2008. Trial Trenching.
Second evaluation of proposed development site.
One trench was excavated as close to Barrack street as possible, and a wall orientated approximately north- south was encountered. It comprised flints bonded in lime motar. A sondage was excavated in the north- west corner of the trench and revealed a flint cobbled surface. The trench also produced a sherd of medieval pottery.
A second trench was excavated within the south-west corner of the site . A ditch was encountered and a clear sequence of fills was observed. The fill produced post- medieval pottery, animal bone, fragments of clay tobacco pipes, oyster shell and a horn core fragment. Four timber posts lay within the west part of the ditch oriented north-south and appeared to have been driven into the ground from the surface. Two further timber posts were present at the east side of the ditch.
See report (S2) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S3).
Previously recorded under NHER 51751.
