Full Description
September 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a series of medieval to post medieval enclosures and field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs on ‘Mill Hill’, Aldeby (S1-S3). The site is centred on TM 4553 9326. The cropmarks of the associated postmill have been recorded under NHER 16165. Medieval to post medieval boundaries of the same phase, possibly associated with the Priory, have been recorded to the immediate south (NHER 44949).
The boundaries define a series of slightly curvilinear and elongated fields, which run roughly parallel to the existing trackway and boundary to the south. The postmill is located within the central field. The boundaries appear to be double or triple ditched in places, suggesting probable trackways or recutting of the ditches over time.
Centred on TM 4550 9323 is a series of pits that coincide with the location of a former structure marked on the Ordnance Survey second edition map (1902-7, 25 inch) (S4). To the immediate east of these pits and structures are a group well-defined rectangular enclosures or fields. These continue in a more fragmentary form further to the east.
S. Massey (NMP), 01 September 2006.
