NHER 45025 (Monument record) - Multi-period cropmarks

A group of undated and multi-period cropmarks are visible on aerial photographs on ‘Mill Hill’, Aldeby (S1-S5). The site is centred on TM 4559 9334. An area of late prehistoric or Iron Age enclosures and fields (NHER 45019), a medieval to post medieval postmill (NHER 16165) and associated fields and enclosures (NHER 45026) located within the extent of this site and have been recorded separately.

The majority of the cropmarks are too fragmentary to warrant much discussion and are likely to represent elements of former field boundaries and ditches dating to from the late prehistoric onwards. Although a few slightly more coherent clusters of features are visible. Centred on TM 4570 9344 is an area of ditches that appear to form part of a field system. This is clearly aligned on a different axis to the fields and enclosures of NHER 45019. It is not obvious from the cropmarks whether these are earlier or later phases of activity. At TM 4555 9321 to the south a possible rectilinear enclosure or intersection of fields is indicated, with ditches aligned roughly N-S and E-W. At TM 4590 9353, to the northeast of the site, another small group of field boundaries also follow this alignment.
