Map

June 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a ring ditch are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Cross Lane, Surlingham (S1). It is possible that this represents the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, although it may be relate to a small enclosure or agricultural feature of unknown date. Finds in this general area range from Roman, Saxon, medieval and post medieval in date (NHER 31656, 31390, 50027).

The site is centred on TG 3088 0531. In 1976 (S2) the ring ditch would appear to be 8m in diameter with a broader and possibly braided ditch to the east, giving it the appearance of having a small annexed feature on one side. However in 1964 (S1) the ring ditch looks more oval in shape. It is possible that the 1976 aerial photographs are also showing underlying geological cropmarks that are confusing the appearance of the archaeological features.
S. Massey (NMP), 23 June 2007.
