Map

June 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a group of undated and fragmentary enclosures and field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs to the west of Cross Lane, Surlingham (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 3062 0548. Finds in this general area range from Roman, Saxon, medieval and post medieval in date (NHER 31656, 36820, 50027).

The majority of the ditches are aligned roughly NW-SE and NE-SW and are likely to represent fragments of field system, and where double ditched, trackways. Although it is possible that some of them originally formed rectilinear enclosed areas, such as at TG 3056 0571 and TG 3064 0518. Although it must be noted that some of the cropmarks mapped at both of these locations were only visible on one aerial photograph (S2) and could not be viewed in stereo, making definite identification of features hard, however the summer 1976 date was taken to mean that it was likely that sub-surface archaeological features showing was highly likely. Although it must also be noted that a large number of geological cropmarks were also showing often making identification of the archaeological features uncertain.
S. Massey (NMP), 23 June 2007.
