Map

June 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The soilmarks of a possible post medieval mill mound are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Mill Road, Surlingham (S1). This feature has been recorded and not mapped, as there is some uncertainty as to whether the soilmarks have an archaeological cause. It is possible that the colour variation visible in the field is geological in origin. The site is centred on TG 3168 0605.

The possible site consists of a pale coloured circular soilmark, approximately 25m across. This is located approximately 200m to the northeast of the location of a mill marked on Faden’s map of 1797 (S2) recorded under NHER 15580. It is possible that this circular soilmark reveals the remains of a mill mound. An alternative interpretation is that it is the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, see NHER 18336 for discussion of nearby barrow sites.
