NHER 49616 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Cropmarks of probable Bronze Age round barrow

The cropmarks of a double concentric ring ditch, probably Bronze Age round barrow, are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Grove Road, Southwood (S1). The site is centred on TG 3960 0605. The ring ditch is polygonal in shape and measures 18.5m by 16 external ditch and 14m by 12m internally. This monument appears to have been deliberately incorporated into a planned Roman landscape (NHER 6096) and has probably been used as a marker in the laying out of the trackway system. This may be drawing on existing perceptions of boundaries or territory associated with the monument or it may have acted as an obvious fixed point in the landscape around which the Roman system was arranged. The trackway runs up to the outer ditch and disappears until the opposite side of the ring ditch, indicating that a central mound or external feature still existed at this point.
