Map

July 2007. Norfolk NMP
An undated earthwork of a large mound containing two pits is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). This earthwork is located at TM 4286 9941 on the edge of Thurlton Marshes. The mound has an irregular sub-trapezoidal plan and measures 108m by 83m. It appears to be bounded or cut by extant drainage ditches on its west and north sides. A rectangular pit, with dimensions of 18m by 8m, is present on its western edge. A second pit is located east of the centre of the mound. The date and function of this earthwork mound is not known and it is possible that it is a natural feature. However, its location on the edge of the marshes could mean that it is a saltern mound. It is not clear if the two pits cut into the mound are related to it or if they are of later date.
