Summary

A World War Two searchlight battery is visible as a group of earthworks, structures and buildings on aerial photographs. There are no large settlements or known military installations in the immediate vicinity, and the site was probably part of the national searchlight grid. More recent aerial photographs demonstrate that the area has since been ploughed, and there is no evidence that any part of the World War Two site still survives above ground.

Map

July 2007. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two searchlight battery is visible on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TM 3459 9704. The principal emplacement is visible in the northwest corner of the site, with the remains of possibly two further emplacements (perhaps temporary or replaced) visible to the south. A number of huts and/or buildings and areas of hardstanding presumably relate to the provision of accommodation, etc., on site. The entire site occupies a patch of grassland, surrounded by arable, which may once have been protected by a fence or similar barrier. A small patch of disturbed ground on the opposite side of the road to the east could also relate to activity associated with the site.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 19 July 2007.
