The earthworks of probable medieval salterns are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Willow Farm, Thurlton (S1). The site is centred on TM 4367 9926.
The site consists of three groups of earthwork mounds located at TM 4353 9945, TM 4362 9927 and TM 4384 9910. The clearest earthworks are found within the central group, which is bisected by a ditch, most likely a drainage channel. The parish boundary also runs through this group, following the line of the channel. It is possible that these mounds are the heaped up waste products from medieval salt production associated with tidal creeks running through the former tidal estuary. A large mound, also interpreted as a possible saltern (NHER 49667), has been recorded to the immediate west.
