Summary

A group of multi-period enclosures, trackways and field boundaries is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Some elements of the site appear to be of relatively late, probably post medieval date. Others, it has been suggested, are part of a Roman settlement or building. Certainly, significant clusters of finds have been recovered from the vicinity of many of the features (NHER 13009), but at present it is difficult to identify distinct phases of activity amongst the cropmarks.

Map

July 2007. Norfolk NMP.
Some of the cropmarks described below were previously recorded as part of NHER 13009.

A group of multi-period cropmarks is visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), centred at TM 3670 9676. They appear to represent various enclosures, trackways and field boundaries. Some elements of the site appear to be of relatively late, probably post medieval date. The trackway visible running along the western part of the north side of the site (between TM 3638 9688 and TM 3673 9686) is almost certainly an earlier course of Transport Lane, for example. Others have been suggested to be part of a Roman settlement or building, specifically the cluster of substantial rectilinear ditches visible at TM 3665 9669 (see NHER 13009). Not enough is visible to confirm this suggestion, and although the varying orientation and character of certain features suggests this is a multi-period site, it is difficult at present to identify distinct phases. Certainly, significant quantities of material of Roman date have been recovered from the vicinity of some of these features (NHER 13009), and a Roman period settlement at or near this site seems highly probable.

It should be noted that rectification of the oblique aerial photographs for the eastern part of the site was poor, and this may have had an adverse effect on the accuracy of the mapping.
