Civil Parish TERRINGTON ST CLEMENT, WEST NORFOLK, NORFOLK

Map

August 2006. Discovered after topsoil removed in advance of turfing, in the garden of a bungalow built around 1970 on arable land.
Cache of sawn animal bones (cattle, pig, possibly horse), concealed beneath late 20th century bricks, tarred roofing felt and sewer pipe fragments; set in clay matrix that might otherwise have been taken to be natural. Bones were identified by J. Curl (NAU Archaeology) and dated as not of antiquity but probably before the 20th century. They were suggested to be waste products of some industrial or food process. These remains were probably found when the
bungalow was constructed and carefully hidden in this way, perhaps because they were thought to be human.
E. Rose (NLA), 31 August 2006.
