Full Description
October 2007. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site. Contexts 1000-1011.
Excavation of two trial trenches revealed a Late Bronze Age to Middle Iron Age pit, a pit or ditch containing two sherds of Thetford ware, early medieval pottery, and pig bones. A substantial 18th to 19th century foundation of pitched chalkstone blocks overlain by a surface of loose chalk fragments with brick and pan-tile fragments was also encountered. This foundation covered the entire exposed area of the trench and the chalk covering has been interpreted as a yard surface, likely associated with or part of an outbuilding depicted on the first edition OS map (S1), adjacent to the public house.
See report (S2) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S3).
H. Hamilton (NLA), 07 March 2008.
