NHER 50652 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Cropmarks of an undated rectangular enclosure

November 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of an undated rectangular enclosure are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Morton Plantation (S1-S4). A Saxon date has tentatively been suggested, although an Iron Age to Roman date is also a possibility. Finds of Iron Age, Roman and Saxon date have been recovered from the general vicinity of these cropmarks (NHER 29344, 29962, 25247). Other finds dating from the Neolithic period onwards have also been found in this area. This feature is located to the immediate west of a large ring ditch, thought to be the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow (NHER 45361). The site is centred on TG 1189 1713.

The enclosure is 11m by 6m. The date of the feature is uncertain, although an Iron Age to Roman or Saxon date could be postulated from the finds in the area. A similar shaped rectangular ditched feature is located approximately 1.2 km to the west (NHER 50679), although this enclosure measures 7.5m by 3.5m. This smaller ditched rectangular enclosure has been proved through excavation to be the remains of a late Saxon post-in-trench building. This building lies on top of another Late Saxon building, which forms part of a group of three larger post-built structures.

June 2015. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of land to south of Morton Plantation.
This survey identified no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with this enclosure.
Elsewhere the survey had mixed results, successufully identifying ditches associated with other cropmarks mapped in this field (NHER 50654), but failing to identify at least two other ditches that were shown to be precent by subsequent trial trenching.

A trench that clipped the southern side of this enclosure revealed no evidence for associated sub-surface remains.
