Full Description
November 2007. Norfolk NMP
A cropmark of a curving linear ditch, probably a field boundary of medieval to post medieval date, is visible on aerial photographs (S1). The cropmark is present for a distance of over 360m on a roughly north to south alignment. It is cut towards its southern end by the present line of Dereham Road, Gressenhall. The northern part of this ditch appears to relate to a field boundary marked on a 1624 map of the parish (S2). However, Dereham Road is shown on its present course on that map, suggesting that the boundary itself is an earlier feature. The field boundary is not shown on an 1813 map of Gressenhall (S3) and had been removed by that date.
J. Albone (NMP), 09 November 2007
February 2024. Wendling Beck and Fransham Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project (volunteer strand).
The medieval to post medieval field boundary described above is visible as a cropmark on Google Earth aerial photography from 2006 (S4). Other, straighter linear ditches, which probably relate to later, post medieval field boundaries, are visible as cropmarks in the same field and have been recorded separately as NHER 68041.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 19 February 2024.
