Full Description
November 2007. Norfolk NMP
Earthworks of possible building platforms and drainage ditches of medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1). A group of four possible earthwork platforms are present to the north of Rectory Farm on Dereham Road, Gressenhall. They are arranged in a north to south line with two roughly square platforms present in the north of the group each measuring approximately 30m across. To their south are two smaller roughly triangular platforms. It is possible that these earthworks relate to medieval to early post medieval buildings which fronted on to Dereham Road. A map of the parish dating to 1624 (S2) shows some buildings along the roadside, but it is likely that they were located further to the south at Rectory Farm. To the east of Rectory Farm are earthworks of ditches forming a cross shape. It is likely that they are drainage and enclosure boundary ditches of medieval to post medieval date.

The possible medieval to post medieval building platforms described above are only vaguely visible on visualised lidar data (S3), from a survey flown in 2017. The earthworks at this location are extremely poorly defined, and are not particularly convincing as archaeological features (their condition, of course, could have degraded since 1946). The drainage ditches to the southeast are indistinguishable from others visible in the surrounding area.
