NHER 50635 (Cropmark and Earthwork record) - Cropmarks of possible Bronze Age round barrow

The soilmarks of a possible Bronze Age round barrow are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Sparhamhole Plantation, Bylaugh (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 0525 1908. The archaeological nature of this site is uncertain and it is possible that the soilmarks relate to underlying geological deposits. The cropmarks, soilmarks and possible earthworks of other Bronze Age round barrows have been recorded in close proximity to the site, forming a small Bronze Age round barrow cemetery (NHER 50639).

The site consists of a roughly circular light-coloured soilmark, approximately 9m in diameter (S1-S2). Other soilmarks with these characteristics within close proximity would appear to be Bronze Age round barrows, such as NHER 12150. However no corresponding ring ditch cropmarks have been identified in associated with this soilmark - even summer photography such as (S2) has revealed no definite traces of the feature. Consequently the level of certainty over the archaeological nature of this site is quite low.
