Full Description
October 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a possible ring ditch may be visible on aerial photographs to the north of the River Wensum at Fustyweed (S1). The site is centred on TG 0559 1864. The archaeological origin of these cropmarks is uncertain and it is possible that they are agricultural in origin. Another more convincing ring ditch cropmark is located 125m to the south (NHER 3052) and a barrow cemetery to the north (NHER 50639). It is therefore possible that this cropmark does in fact relate to an underlying ring ditch or similar archaeological feature.
The cropmark is only visible on one aerial photograph (S1), on which a number of agricultural and geological cropmarks are visible. The ring is located to the immediate west of the field boundary and as such may be likely to be of an agricultural origin, namely a turning circle or fertiliser mark. It is impossible on the evidence from that single photograph to securely assign it either origin. The possible feature has not been mapped due to the uncertainty over the site, coupled with the lack of suitable control for rectification provided by the photograph.
S. Massey (NMP), 22 October 2007.
