Map

December 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks of a series of medieval to post medieval enclosures, boundaries and trackways are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Port Row, Lyng (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 0702 1786. Saxon, medieval and post medieval finds have been recovered from within the vicinity of this site (NHER 12904). Several other areas of medieval earthworks have been recorded within this area, NHER 12303, NHER 16744 and NHER 50734. Two of these (NHER 12303 and NHER 16744) appear to represent significant medieval moated sites.

The site consists of a series of banked and ditched boundaries within the northern part of the site. It is possible that one or several of these ditches, which vary in width from 2.5m to 6m, represent former trackways or hollow ways. A hollowed trackway may also have run from the northeastern part of the site down to The Street to the south, but these earthworks were not mapped as the route still appears to be in use for agricultural access and it was not clear how recent the features were. Two conjoined rectangular enclosures, the largest of which measures 30m across, are also located to the immediate north of The Street. It is likely that these represent property boundaries or stock enclosures. The site has been put into arable cultivation by 1988 (S3) and it appears that the majority of the earthworks have been plough-levelled to a greater extent by this date, although it is possible that some low level earthworks may remain.
