Full Description
December 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The soilmarks of a series of possible structural components associated with St Edmund’s Chapel and the former Priory at Lyng (NHER 3048) may be visible on aerial photographs (S1). The site is centred on TG 0787 1733. The archaeological nature of these soilmarks is uncertain and it is possible that the marks visible are derived from non-archaeological natural features, such as outcrops of the underlying chalk near to the field surface. It must be stated that the identification of these soilmarks as possible archaeological features is heavily influenced by their proximity to the priory. Given a more isolated and non-archaeological context it is unlikely that the solimarks would have been interpreted as being the remains of possible structures. The mapping of the features has been undertaken to flag up the possible existence of former structures surrounding the ruined Priory chapel and should not be seen as a definite identification of sub-surface structural remains.
This potential site consists of a series of indistinct and blurred soilmarks that possibly relate the underlying structures and building platforms suggested by exposed areas of lighter soil that may relate to building rubble or compacted bank material. A series of roughly oblong darker soilmarks could appear to suggest some sub-surface sunken areas, again possibly relating to former structures.
