Summary

A rectilinear arrangement of ditches, probably representing field boundaries of post medieval date, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The cropmarks are relatively well defined and conform to the pattern of enclosure depicted on 19th and 20th century maps. One may correspond to a field boundary depicted on Horstead Tithe Map. To their north and south they overlap the cropmarks of what are presumably earlier field boundaries and enclosures (NHER 50778 and 38359 respectively), and also the southern edge of Horstead Roman camp (NHER 4379), suggesting that the latter had been levelled by this date.

Map

January 2008. Norfolk NMP.
A rectilinear arrangement of ditches is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), centred at TG 2588 1892. They almost certainly represent field boundaries of post medieval date, as they are relatively well defined and conform to the pattern of enclosure depicted on 19th and 20th century maps. One (visible intermittently between TG 2588 1894 and TG 2587 1871) may correspond to a field boundary depicted on Horstead Tithe Map (S5). To their north and south the ditches overlap the cropmarks of what appear to be earlier field boundaries and enclosures (NHER 50778 and 38359 respectively). Also to the north (at TG 2587 1910), one ditch slights the southern edge of Horstead Roman camp (NHER 4379), suggesting that the latter had been levelled by the time that it was created.

January 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed aggregate extraction area.
This survey identified no evidence for surviving sub-surface remains associated with these cropmarks.
