Summary

A linear arrangement of ditch segments, probably representing a field boundary of post medieval date, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. It leads from the corner of a modern field its north, suggesting that it is of relatively recent origin. It overlies an extensive area of medieval field boundaries (part of NHER 39859), most of which have a markedly different alignment. Trial trenching in 2022 confirmed a late post-medieval date for this feature.

Map

January 2008. Norfolk NMP.
A linear arrangement of ditch segments is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), between TG 2561 1858 and TG 2557 1831. It probably represents a field boundary of post medieval date, as it leads from the corner of a modern field its north, suggesting that it is of relatively recent origin. The marks are not particularly well defined however, and they could instead represent more a more ephemeral feature, such as a trackway left by modern agricultural activity. Other boundaries, also of post medieval date, have been identified a short distance to the north (NHER 50779) and south (NHER 50788). The cropmarks described here overlie an extensive area of medieval field boundaries (part of NHER 39859), most of which have a markedly different alignment.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 10 January 2008.

January 2020. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed aggregate extraction area.
This survey identified an extensive linear anomaly that clearly corresponded with this cropmark.
See report (S3 and NHER 68259 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 10 April 2024.

August-September 2022. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed aggregate extraction area.
The excavated trenches exposed several sections of the ditch associated with this cropmark. This feature was found to contain late post-medieval pottery, post-medieval roof tile fragments and an iron knife blade
See NHER 68259 for further details.
