Summary

The cropmarks of a double ditched linear feature, interpreted as the roadside ditches defining a possible Roman road, are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Common Farm, Billingford. This road would appear to run southeast from the Billingford Road, a Roman road, the Fen Causeway (NHER 2796) towards the Bylaugh section of the Wensum Valley. The road is located to the immediate east of Billingford Roman town (NHER 7206). An enclosure (NHER 50871) and a series of boundaries (NHER 50870) possibly contemporary with the road have been recorded separately.

The cropmarks of a double ditched linear feature, interpreted as the roadside ditches defining a possible Roman road, are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Common Farm, Billingford (S2-S3). The site is centred on TG 0173 1985.

The road is visible for approximately 385m and the roadside ditches are 20m apart. This spacing is consistent with the spacing of the Roman roadside ditches excavated at the Billingford Roman town (NHER 7206) (S3). No trace of the agger or compacted road surface was visible on aerial photographs. A small enclosure 10m across, appears to be conjoined to the northern road ditch, however this follows a slightly different alignment to the road and it may therefore be of a different date.
S. Massey (NMP), 03 March 2008.
