Map

January - February 2008. Desk-based Assessment and Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site. Two trenches excavated. Trench 1, in the north-western part of the site, contained no archaeological finds or features. Trench 2, towards the south-east of the site, revealed a large Roman ditch which contained three large unabraded sherds of decorated Roman greyware, suggesting occupation nearby. This trench also contained a sequence of 19th-20th century made ground layers and yard surfaces associated with the farm complex which occupied this site until the 1960s. An east-west aligned flint and lime mortar wall foundation was found at the site of a building marked on the 1st and 2nd edition Ordnance Survey maps. Despite the site's proximity to St Stephen's Hospital (NHER 7110), the only evidence of medieval activity was a buried subsoil layer containing a few sherds of 12th-15th century pottery, sealed beneath the layers of post-medieval made ground.
