Summary

Possible evidence of World War Two military activity, comprising small areas of disturbed ground and the site of a possible building or structure, is visible on 1940s aerial photographs. The site lies approximately 325m to the east of the documented site of a World War Two bombing decoy (NHER 13550), with which it could be associated. A surviving air raid shelter, linked to the decoy site and to an otherwise unrecorded Home Guard training area, has been recorded a short distance to the north (NMR TG 21 NE 43). This too could be associated with the site described here. The field, which was grassland, has since been ploughed, and there is no evidence that any World War Two features now survive above ground.

Map

February 2008. Norfolk NMP.
Possible evidence of World War Two military activity is visible on 1940s aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 2689 1507. The site comprises small, often well-defined, patches of freshly disturbed ground, located along a slight ridge of higher and presumably drier ground. The general area of the disturbance has been mapped only by extent. The site of a possible building or structure is visible towards the northwestern corner of the site (at TG 2686 1515), as an area of flattened or cleared ground. The site lies approximately 325m to the east of the documented site of a World War Two bombing decoy (NHER 13550), with which it could be associated. A surviving air raid shelter, linked to the decoy site and to an otherwise unrecorded Home Guard training area, has been recorded 215m to the north (NMR TG 21 NE 43). This too could be associated with the site described here, which might represent the alleged training ground. The field, which was grassland in the 1940s, has since been ploughed, and there is no evidence that any World War Two features now survive above ground.
