Map

January 2008. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks of enclosures and drainage ditches of medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). A sub-square enclosure with internal dimensions of 40m by 45m is present. Adjoining this are two incomplete rectilinear enclosures which measure 21m wide by at least 42m long. These enclosures are located immediately to the northeast of Grandcourt Farm and are likely to relate to the farm. To the east of the enclosures are earthworks of drainage ditches of probable post medieval date.
J. Albone (NMP), 28 January 2008.

November-December 2011 and May 2012. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey of proposed mineral extraction area (Field A).
This survey identified a group of east-north-east to west-south-west aligned linear anomalies immediately to the south of these remains that potentially represented a double-ditched trackway. Few potentially archaeologically-significant anomalies were identified to the south of this possible trackway, suggesting it likely formed the southern boundary of the remains visible as earthworks.
See NHER 65427 for further details.

February-March 2012. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site of proposed mineral extraction (Area A; Trenches 3-46).
This work demonstrated that the linear geophysical anomalies identified close to this location were associated with a series of parallel linear features, a number of which produced medieval pottery (in one case more than 170 sherds). Although it isn't certain whether these remains were associated with some form of routeway, at the very least they clearly represented a significant boundary that had been maintained over a long period. As indicated by the geophysical survey these features appear to have marked the southern limit of medieval activity at this location, with only a small number of scattered ditches uncovered to the south. A number of perpendicular feature were recorded to the north, including a particularly substantial ditch that appears to have corresponded with the north-to-south aligned earthwork at the centre of this group. The lower fills of this feature produced medieval pottery while a small amount of post-medieval material was recovered from its uppermost fill.
See report (S3) and NHER 65427 for further details.
