Summary

A possible boundary bank, probably of medieval to post medieval date, is visible as a cropmark and/or soilmark on aerial photographs. The bank, partially flanked by a ditch on its east side, follows a dog-leg course for some 370m, perhaps following a natural channel leading from or ending at a pond to its north. The northern end of the feature may correspond with part of a field boundary depicted on 19th century maps.

Map

February 2008. Norfolk NMP.
A possible bank, flanked by a ditch along part of its eastern side, is visible as a soil and or cropmark on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), between TG 2976 1422 and TG 2970 1388. It presumably represents a boundary of some kind, and its general appearance and character suggest it is of medieval to post medieval date. It follows a dog-leg course for some 370m. Its sinuous outline and surrounding 'halo' of slightly darker soil/crop (not mapped) suggest it may follow the line of a natural channel, perhaps leading to or from the pond at its northern end (at TG 2979 1422). This postulated channel may continue further to the north, where it has not been mapped although it may be followed by some of the cropmarks recorded as NHER 18334. The northern end of the marks described here may correspond with part of a field boundary depicted on the Tithe Map (S4) and Ordnance Survey 1st edition 1 inch (S5). A variety of medieval and post medieval objects and also a Mesolithic axehead have been recovered from the vicinity (NHER 40114), but there is no known association with the cropmarks.
