Summary

Parallel linear ditches, visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs, probably represent field boundaries of post medieval date. They conform to the orientation and pattern of the modern fields, and those depicted on 19th century maps. Their east-west alignment is clearly distinct from the northeast-southwest orientation of a possible Iron Age to Roman date field system (NHER 50726) with which they overlap. It also differs from that of an enclosure (NHER 29575) of possible late medieval to early post medieval date, which lies 75m to the southwest. A possible rectilinear enclosure at the site’s southeastern corner may be of modern agricultural, rather than archaeological, origin.

Map

February 2008. Norfolk NMP.
Parallel linear ditches and a possible rectilinear enclosure are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 2938 1524. The linear ditches probably represent field boundaries of post medieval date, as they conform to the orientation of the modern fields, and those depicted on 19th century maps (for example the Salhouse Tithe Map (S3)). A possible rectilinear enclosure at the southeastern corner of the site (visible at TG 2953 1517) shares the orientation of the postulated field boundaries and may be of similar date. There is strong possibility, however, given that it lies close to field entrance and its western side is parallel to the modern tramlines, that it is a product of modern agricultural activity.
