Full Description
December 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches, probably the remains of field boundaries of unknown date, are visible on aerial photographs to the west of Beck Hall, Billingford (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 0177 2086. A Roman date for at least one phase of these cropmarks has been suggested due to the site's proximity to the Roman town of Billingford (NHER 7206) and the shared alignment of these features with the boundaries and enclosures forming the main part of the settlement. However, it is possible that the fields represent later prehistoric features. Several of the boundaries are double ditched and may therefore represent the remains of trackways that ran along the edges of fields or grazing areas. A number of linear cropmarks broadly following the same alignment as the medieval to post medieval field layout have been omitted from the mapping.
S. Massey (NMP), 19 December 2007.
