Summary

The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches, probably the remains of boundaries and drainage ditches dating from the Roman to post medieval periods, are visible on aerial photographs to the east of the River Wensum at Billingford. The proximity of the site to the River Wensum would also indicate that some of the linear features mapped could relate to drainage ditches of post medieval or modern date.

Map

December 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of fragmentary ditches, probably the remains of boundaries and drainage ditches dating from the Roman to post medieval periods, are visible on aerial photographs to the east of the River Wensum at Billingford (S1). The site is centred on TG 0053 2024. A Roman date for these cropmarks could be suggested due to the site’s close proximity to the Roman town of Billingford (NHER 7206). Although the cropmarks do not particularly share the same alignment as the cropmarks associated with the town. Material dating to the Roman, Saxon and medieval periods has been found within the vicinity of the site and therefore a post-Roman date is possible for some or all of the features mapped. The proximity of the site to the River Wensum would also indicate that some of the linear features mapped could relate to drainage ditches of post medieval or modern date.
