NHER 50875 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of trackways and field boundaries of possible late prehistoric to Roman

The cropmarks of trackways and field boundaries of possible late prehistoric to Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs to the west of Castle Farm, Swanton Morley (S1-S3). Finds in the area range in date from the prehistoric period to Roman (NHER 2989, 2994, 12297) and the site is located to the south of a possible Roman bridge (NHER 2993). The site is centred on TG 0338 1772. A barrow cemetery of probable Neolithic to Bronze Age date is located within this area of field and tracks (NHER 50860). It is assumed that these monuments were still extant when these boundaries were constructed. These cropmarks appear to overlain by a second series of trackways and fields of probable medieval to post medieval date.

The site consists of fragmentary ditches, assumed to be the remains of former field boundaries, and double ditched linears, interpreted as trackways. The majority follow an alignment of NW-SE or SW-NE . An additional trackway, possibly related to this site has been recorded approximately 300m to the south under NHER 50877, as it follows a similar alignment.
