Full Description
March 2008. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a trackway of unknown date is visible on aerial photographs to the west of Watlington Road near Gravelpit Plantation (S1). This site is centred on TF 6306 1155. The date of this linear feature is not certain, although comparison with other curving raised trackways surviving as earthworks in the 1940s (NHER 50925, 50928), could indicate that it is medieval to post medieval in date. Although it is also possible that it represents a much earlier trackway. Cropmarks recorded in the area might indicate fields and boundaries dating to the later prehistoric and/or Roman periods (NHER 50952). Excavations to the south indicate extensive Roman settlement and fields (NHER 39458) and finds to the immediate west of the site indicate prehistoric, possibly Bronze Age, occupation (NHER 23238).
The trackway is visible as a curvilinear parchmark, indicating the former presence of banked or compacted area, up to 3m wide and 120m, and flanked by ditch on either side.
S. Massey (NMP), 05 March February 2008.
