Map

Late 1970s. Obstacle hit by deep ploughing.
Farm worker asked [1] to investigate, and a large slab of masonry was uncovered and photographed.
See digital copy of slide (S1).
Large amounts of Roman pottery in this field have been noted by [1]. Note that this grid reference is approximate, but the location was not very far into the field, i.e. east of the road from Wickhampton to Halvergate, and perhaps only 2m in from the bank. [1] may have informed Barbara Green (NCM) at the time, but this does not appear to be recorded on the HER.
It is difficult to see what this might be from the photo, but it is probably Roman or medieval in date. If Roman, the 'island' of a channelled hypocaust is one possibility. This locations falls within an area of Roman cropmarks and settlement, NHER 49400.
Information from [1].
David Gurney (NLA), 13 March 2008.
