Map

Shrublands estate. Laid out 1946-7 consisting of 711 Arcon bungalows (prefabs) on the plan of housing estates of the 1920s, part access by road and part by footpath. The estate was planned so that the prefabs could be replaced by proper houses keeping the road layout, and permanent shops with flats and two public houses were included from the beginning. A contractors’ hut was reused as an ex-servicemens’ club. Tenants were moved in from the bombed areas of central Yarmouth and included 1,400 children. Site is of great importance as one of the few post-World War II prefab estates that actually were replaced on the same plan by standard housing; plate in (S1) copy in file, should be compared with present day map. Site is also important in that the Gunnery position 32667 was reused within a year as the centre of the estate.
