Summary

Report of “massive walls found at depth of seven feet” on Melton Grange building site. Builders stated the findspot was a former pond. The concrete for the walls seemed to have been poured in situ and may therefore be unlikely to have a military origin. Possibly this was some sort of pumphouse.

Map

2000. Report of “massive walls found at depth of seven feet” on Melton Grange building site.
Builders stated the findspot was a former pond and located it at TG15950693. E Rose (NLA) could see no traces of anything here but at TG15960685 was a thick black layer covered by a metre of sandy soil and a pond is marked here on (S1) although (S2) and older maps show only a junction of two ditches. Some small fragments of concrete and a few bricks were noted at a depth of 0.25m (nearer two feet than the seven quoted).
The “walls” had been dumped some distance away and consisted of three huge lumps of concrete mixed with flints, 3m long by 1m thick. They were stated not to have been joined together.
The concrete seemed to have been poured in situ and may therefore be unlikely to have a military origin. Possibly this was some sort of pumphouse.
E. Rose (NLA), 19 December 2006
