Full Description
April 2008. Field visit.
An earthwork bank, 6m to 7m wide, up to 0.5m tall. Aligned roughly north to south, following the line of (or followed by the line of) the Mundford/Lynford parish boundary. Observed between TL 81494 91001 and TL 81523 90864.
A second bank aligned parallel to the first is located about 12m to east. This is now recorded under NHER 62030.
The area mapped at the original time of recording [2] showed the extent of the two banks seen during the site visit; both may continue further north but this is not known for certain.
The first bank is a parish boundary bank of uncertain date. The second bank (NHER 62030) could be contemporary with the first. Together they could have marked the outer edges of a trackway.
D. Robertson (NLA), 12 May 2008. Amended H. Hamilton (HES), 11 June 2021 [1].
December 2011. Field visit.
An earthwork bank on the line of the Mundford/Lynford parish boundary. 5-7m wide, up to 0.5m wide, aligned roughly north to south, observed between TL 81365 91373 and TL 81398 91273.
The second/eastern bank previously seen to the south (NHER 62030) was not observed.
The mapping for the site has been extended to include the newly recorded section.
D. Robertson (HES), 18 May 2012.
April 2017. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The earthwork bank along the Lynford/Mundford parish boundary, described above, which is likely to be post-medieval, or even medieval, in date, is visible on imagery from a recent lidar survey (S1). It has not been mapped by the project, as the boundary is depicted on both modern and historical Ordnance Survey maps; it also largely falls outside the project area.
The second bank to the east, which contrary to the description above is not in fact parallel to the bank along the parish boundary, is also visible as an earthwork on the lidar imagery. It is now recorded as NHER 62030.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 3 April 2017.
July 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The probably post-medieval (or earlier) earthwork bank described above, which follows or is followed by the Mundford/Lynford parish boundary, is visible as an earthwork on imagery from a 2015 lidar survey (S1). It falls within the Stage 2 project area and has been mapped, although it is also depicted on modern and historical Ordnance Survey maps. The earthwork is visible from the southeastern corner of Mundford parish (at TL 8153 9085), extending northwards to TL 8127 9197, where it is continued by the boundaries defining the woodland plantations surrounding Lynford Hall and Park (NHER 30470) [2].
S. Tremlett (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 4 July 2019.
