Map

Site of the Angel Hotel, constructed in the 18th century of white bricks - main façade had 3 bays and 3 storeys. The central bay was flanked by pilasters and had a tiny perdiment above. Central door. Shop front to the right with a door across the corner and scroll iron brackets to the hood - this is likely to have been a 19th century alteration. The hotel was demolished in 1992 amd rebuilt almost in replica, without the shop front, as a hostel called Angel Court. See (S1) in file. (S2) notes that when the hotel was first constructed, on glebe land, it was recorded that a vault was found. The vault was seen again at the time of rebuilding. No further details known but the same source states that many premises in the Market Place have large cellars extending under the road.
