Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new car park and construction of small extension. Various service trenches were also examined.
Stripping of the car park area exposed four small, irregular features that were probably caused by tree roots. Three Roman pottery sherds and two medieval pottery sherds were recovered from these features. A fifth small feature was found to be a modern animal burial.
No features were observed during the excavation of footings for the extension. The various service trenches also exposed no archaeologically significant deposits.
Unstratified finds recovered during the works in this area included:
1 ?prehistoric burnt flint.
1 Neolithic/Bronze Age flint end and side scraper and 1 retouched flake.
1 post-medieval pottery sherd and 1 clay tobacco pipe fragment.
See report (S1) for further details.
