Summary

Linear cropmarks of uncertain date were visible on aerial photographs. Their full extent and nature is unclear, but they appear to respect the position of a paleochannel and they were therefore initially thought to possibly represent late prehistoric activity, perhaps in the form of an enclosure ditch (they are also on a similar alignment to a possible Iron Age to Roman field system recorded 1.65km to the northeast - NHER 50744). However trial trenching undertaken in 2018 demonstrated that these cropmarks are almost certainly associated with two distinct features, with the main north-east to south-west aligned cropmark corresponding with a probable field boundary ditch that produced post-medieval finds.

October 2008. Norfolk NMP.
Linear ditches visible on aerial photographs at TG 25991212 of possible late prehistoric date.
Only visible on one set of photographs (S1), and therefore somewhat uncertain, a curving linear cropmark is visible to the north of, and respecting the position of a paleochannel to the southwest (S1)-(S2). It appears to run for approximately 76m on a northeast-southwest alignment from TG 2606 1217 to TG 2601 1212, after which there is an apparent break in the ditch for approximately 37m. This may not be a genuine break in the feature, but could just represent masking of the archaeology. The ditch then continues, curving round to the west from TG 2598 1210 to TG 2594 1209. These features are on a similar alignment to a possible Iron Age to Roman field system recorded 1.65km to the northeast (NHER 50744) and as such a late prehistoric date seems possible. The curving ditch features recorded as NHER 50999, centred at approximately 200m to the southeast, are similar in nature, and may also date to this period.

July 2018. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site.
Three of the trenches exposed sections of a north-east to south-west aligned ditch that clearly corresponded with the main cropmark feature mapped at this location. It was however clear that this ditch continued on this alignment, rather than turning to the west as suggested by the cropmark evidence.
Several post-medieval finds were recovered from what was thought to be a recut of this feature, suggesting it was most likely associated with a boundary of relatively recent date. Post-medieval material was also found in a perpendicular ditch identified to the east.
See NHER 63090 and report (S4) for further details.
