February 2022. Aylsham and Brampton Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AIM) Project.
A series of fragmentary linear ditches (see above) which may date to the medieval to post medieval period can be seen as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S2-S4). It is possible that the features may relate to medieval to post medieval field boundaries. Multi period finds (including Roman, medieval and post medieval) have been previously recorded across the area (NHER 11662). It is therefore possible that some of the mapped features may be earlier (possibly Roman) in date. The features are in amongst a dense area of geological cropmarks and its possible that some of the features may be natural in origin or possibly relate to modern drainage. The previously recorded possible trackway (see above) most likely relates to a natural feature. Cropmarks of post medieval boundaries recorded on the readily available historic maps (such as S5) have not been mapped as part of this project.
