Full Description
November 2008. Norfolk NMP.
A World War Two air raid shelter is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs (S1), at TG 2807 1108 in Thorpe End. The small, rectangular, surface-level structure is comparable to other shelters mapped elsewhere in Norwich (e.g. NHER 51891).
The shelter consists of a roughly rectangular concrete structure. Four raised structures on its roof indicate that it may represent a block of four shelters, as it has the same dimensions (7 by 5 m overall) as the brick and concrete surface shelters described in Dobinson Vol VIII, p.88-9 (S3) and presumably provided protection for the civilian population of the nearby streets. No trace of it is visible on recent aerial photographs (S2).
E. Bales (NMP), 14 November 2008.
