Full Description
November 2008. Norfolk NMP.
Cropmarks of ditches on a north-south alignment are visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2) of the area, centred at TG 2954 1010 and TG 2964 1009. As these ditches appear to overlie the possible Iron Age to Roman features (NHER 52110) and share their alignment with the possible medieval to post medieval features 40m to the east (NHER 51953), they may date to the medieval to post medieval period.
This medieval to post medieval phase of the site includes an enclosure, which abuts the road, measuring at least 80m x 33m, with possible internal divisions. The features are reminiscent of the settlement site at Rackheath (NHER 50825) and, although situated slightly to the south, may represent part of the former settlement of Tukes Green represented on Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk (S3), or at least enclosures or paddocks associated with this settlement.
E. Bales (NMP), 28 November 2008.
August-October 2014. Strip Map and Sample Excavation.
Excavation on route of Postwick Overflow and Distribution Main pipeline (Area 2).
The narrow strip excavated coincided with the easternmost east-to-west aligned cropmark. This was found to correspond with an adjacent pair of ditches but unfortunately both were undated. The other features exposed also produced virtually no dating evidence (with only a single sherd of medieval pottery recovered).
See report (S4) and NHER 64832 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 April 2021.
