Summary

A series of possible medieval to post medieval linear features were visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Their alignment appears to largely correspond with the field boundaries visible on the 1839 Tithe Map, and as such they have been dated to the medieval to post medieval period.

Map

November 2008. Norfolk NMP.
A series of possible medieval to post medieval linear features were visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), centred on TG 2872 1033. Their alignment appears to largely correspond with the field boundaries visible on the 1839 Tithe Map, and as such they have been dated to the medieval to post medieval period.

March-June 2009. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Site G6).
Although the area examined coincided with several of these cropmarks this survey revealed little evidence for surviving sub-surface remains. The one exception was a linear anomaly that appears to have corresponded with the north-to-south aligned cropmark at TG 2878 1036.
It should be noted that this survey failed to identify a range of features that were show to be preset by subsequent trial trenching.
See report (S2) and NHER 62531 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 27 July 2018 and 11 July 2019.

April-May 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Field G6).
This work identified ditches that corresponded with the fragmentary north-to-south aligned cropmarks recorded at TG 2866 1044 and TG 2878 1036, the latter of which produced post-medieval pottery. Post-medieval pottery was also recovered from a third north-to-south aligned ditch that probably represents a continuation of the similarly-aligned cropmark at TG 2863 1034. This feature also appears to correspond with a former field boundary shown on 19th century maps.
The perpenicular north-to-south and east-to-west aligned cropmarks in the south-east corner of the field were also found to be associated with surviving ditches, although these were both undated.
See report (S3) and NHER 62531 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 27 July 2018 and 11 July 2019.
