December 2008. Building Survey.
Level 2 survey of buildings at Lancaster Park Farm, prior to their proposed conversion.
Three structures were identified, all of which appear to be 19th century. Building A, aligned north-south with the road, was constructed of clunch with occasional brick fragments. The roof was gabled, with pan tiles on the western slope and plain tiles to the east. Traces of a shallow plinth were noted at the base of the western elevation. The north-west corner had been damaged by collisions with farm traffic and had been rebuilt in modern brick. Entrance was gained by two doorways positioned at either end of the eastern elevation. Just north of the centre of the east elevation a segemental arched doorway had been blocked with chalk block and brick. A rectangular opening or pitching hole was preserved in the upper portion of the north-facing gable wall. The sill, jambs and lintel were of brick, with an externally opening shutter in a wooden frame. Two further windows were recorded towards the centre of the western elevation, facing the road. Chalk block infill below and between the windows indicates that they have been inserted into a previous entrance.
Building B was also of clunch with occasional brick inclusions, contained beneath a gable roof shared with Building C. A brick wall of English bond formed the eastern wall of Building B and seperated it from Building C. The only entrance was a single doorway on the northern elevation. A single window, also in the northern elevation, had a brick sill and jambs, and its lintel was hidden beneath the wall plate. A geometric vent was positioned in the southern elevation, forming a diamond pattern using headers of bricks and space left by omitting every other brick.
Building C was very similar in appearance to Building B in construction material and window and door arrangements. The southern elevatio, however, was built entirely of brick in English bond. A door and window were located in this elevation. The use of brick suggests that Building C was once open on the south side, probably with posts to support the roof.
